CHOOSE YOUR LOG CABIN WALL THICKNESS: Which one is best for me?

Which wall thickness and cabin specification is best for you?

Insulating the roof and floor of a single skin cabin dramatically improves their usability (warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer), but a Twin Skin is far superior. The table below shows the values achieved with Hortons log cabins (the lower the U value, the better it is).

Cabin Specifications U-value of Building (W/m²K)
28mm log cabin, no insulation 2.56
45mm log cabin, no insulation 2.28
28mm log cabin, with just roof insulation - no floor insulation 1.78
45mm log cabin, with just roof insulation - no floor insulation 1.48
45mm log cabin with roof and floor insulation 0.84
70mm log cabin with roof and floor insulation 0.81
Hortons Insulated Twin Skin Log Cabins
35+35mm Twin Skin log cabin with standard fiberglass insulation kit 0.6
35+35mm Twin Skin log cabin with standard Celotex insulation kit 0.35
45+45mm Twin Skin log cabin with standard Celotex insulation kit (50mm wall cavity) 0.34
45+45mm Twin Skin log cabin with non-habitable UK Building Regulations Celotex insulation kit (90mm wall cavity) 0.23
45+45mm Twin Skin log cabin with UK Building Regulations Celotex insulation kit (105mm wall cavity) 0.21
70+70mm Twin Skin log cabin with UK Building Regulations Celotex insulation kit (105mm wall cavity) 0.2

For realistic comparison purposes, this is a table showing the U values required by UK Building Regulations for homes over

the years, so you can see how the insulation of our cabins compare with houses built through the decades -

We also offer upgrades for windows and doors, glazed areas, and cold spots. Upgrading these makes a big difference as well.

What makes a warm garden room?

This 5x3m pent garden room has many different specifications and options. The base model is 28mm single skin wall logs, which is perfectly fine as an uninsulated summerhouse or store room. Next up are 34mm and 44mm walls. These are more substantial than the 28mm cabin. But not just thicker - they have double tongue and grooves for a stronger, more weatherproof joint. Not only that, but they also come with double glazing as standard as well. But if you add our insulated roof and floor kit to these, it makes it much more useable. It's warm enough to use in Spring and Autumn with minimal heat required. Then stepping up further through the wall thicknesses to 70mm single skin. This is obviously a very substantial strong log cabin and obviously that much warmer than a 28mm wall.

However, Twin Skin cabins are about 3 times warmer than an equivalent amount of timber to use a thick single skinned cabin due to the cavity walls. We can even make cabins to comply with Building Regulations for habitation! Our Twin skin cabins are suitable as garden annexes because they are as warm as a new-build house! Quality Log Cabin Kits

All of our log cabin kits are made from good quality kiln dried spruce which is felled from responsibly managed and sustainable forests. The key to stable timber is that it grows in cold climates. This makes each growth ring thinner, leading to a dense and durable product. The thinner the growth ring, the thinner each cell becomes. It is the thickness of the timber cells that make it more stable, or not.

We make all Hortons log cabins from slow grown spruce timber. Double glazed windows and doors are standard for all Hortons Log Cabins of wall thickness 35mm and above. 28mm Log cabins come with single glazing as standard ( Upgrade is available). We fit your glass for free before delivery, unlike some of our competitors. Hortons cabin doors come with special security hinges which are also adjustable. It is not possible to unscrew our log cabin doors from their frame to gain access - we use special security hinges which are also fully adjustable. We can add extra doors and windows to any Hortons Log Cabin, call us for details & quotes. Minimum purlin size for Hortons log cabins is 70x140mm and no greater than 600mm apart for a very strong roof
