CHOOSE YOUR LOG CABIN WALL THICKNESS: Which one is best for me?

Which wall thickness and cabin specification is best for you?

Insulating the roof and floor of a single skin cabin dramatically improves their usability (warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer), but a Twin Skin is far superior. The table below shows the values achieved with Hortons log cabins (the lower the U value, the better it is).

Cabin Specifications U-value of Building (W/m²K)
28mm log cabin, no insulation 2.56
45mm log cabin, no insulation 2.28
28mm log cabin, with just roof insulation - no floor insulation 1.78
45mm log cabin, with just roof insulation - no floor insulation 1.48
45mm log cabin with roof and floor insulation 0.84
70mm log cabin with roof and floor insulation 0.81
Hortons Insulated Twin Skin Log Cabins
35+35mm Twin Skin log cabin with standard fiberglass insulation kit 0.6
35+35mm Twin Skin log cabin with standard Celotex insulation kit 0.35
45+45mm Twin Skin log cabin with standard Celotex insulation kit (50mm wall cavity) 0.34
45+45mm Twin Skin log cabin with non-habitable UK Building Regulations Celotex insulation kit (90mm wall cavity) 0.23
45+45mm Twin Skin log cabin with UK Building Regulations Celotex insulation kit (105mm wall cavity) 0.21
70+70mm Twin Skin log cabin with UK Building Regulations Celotex insulation kit (105mm wall cavity) 0.2

For realistic comparison purposes, this is a table showing the U values required by UK Building Regulations for homes over

the years, so you can see how the insulation of our cabins compare with houses built through the decades -

4x4m pent roof garden cabin with a contemporary design

This garden room has a pent roof (single sloping from front to back), with cloices of roof pitch. The fully glazed doors and 4 tall opening windows give it that modern styling and let lots of light into the building.

This garden cabin has lots of uses

This garden cabin is very light and airy inside, which means that it is really adaptable for many different activities. It is perfect for an artist's studio or hobby room  which rely on a good amount of natural light. Not forgetting that it makes a great summerhouse with plenty of room inside for tables and chairs. You could even take that up by a notch with our Twin skin version which is as warm as a house! Make this a fully functioning extra annexe room to your house. So you can do more than just out in it - you can treat it as an extra living room.

    Longevity

Like all timber buildings, this cabin does need ongoing maintenance. But you can make it much easier to achieve this by choosing Sadolin Superdec to paint the walls as this lasts up to 10 years before needing to re-paint. There are umpteen colour choices, so you are sure to find a colour to your taste. The other exposed area is the roof, if you opt for the EPDM rubber roofing, this comes with a 20 year warranty and will probably last much longer than that.

We make all Hortons log cabins from slow grown spruce timber. Double glazed windows and doors are standard for all Hortons Log Cabins of wall thickness 35mm and above. 28mm Log cabins come with single glazing as standard ( Upgrade is available). We fit your glass for free before delivery, unlike some of our competitors. Hortons cabin doors come with special security hinges which are also adjustable. It is not possible to unscrew our log cabin doors from their frame to gain access - we use special security hinges which are also fully adjustable. We can add extra doors and windows to any Hortons Log Cabin, call us for details & quotes. Minimum purlin size for Hortons log cabins is 70x140mm and no greater than 600mm apart for a very strong roof
